WORKSHOP ON TEACHING COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH

Fathima Memorial Training College, Mylapore, Kollam, conducted a workshop on "The Art of Teaching Communicative English" on 2nd August,2024 , which provided educators with valuable insights into the nuances of teaching communicative English to non-native speakers. Joseph Varghese, M.A., a seasoned Communicative English Trainer, delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking talk.

In his session, Joseph Varghese emphasized the importance of equipping teachers with the right tools and techniques to effectively teach communicative English. He began by underlining that English, as a global language, transcends borders, and teaching it proficiently opens doors to greater opportunities for students. His primary focus was on how teachers can inspire confidence in students by building strong foundational skills in communication.

Varghese introduced innovative teaching strategies that can make English learning more engaging and accessible, particularly for students who may find it challenging to express themselves in a second language. He stressed the necessity of creating a supportive and interactive classroom environment where students feel comfortable practicing their language skills. "The classroom should be a space where students are not afraid of making mistakes, but instead are encouraged to learn from them," he said, underscoring the importance of a growth mindset in language acquisition.

A key part of his talk revolved around practical methods for teachers to integrate communicative English into daily lessons. Varghese advocated for using real-life scenarios, role-playing, and interactive discussions as vital teaching techniques that make learning more relatable and enjoyable for students. These methods, he noted, help learners develop the confidence to communicate fluently and effectively in English.

Joseph Varghese's session resonated with the attendees, many of whom expressed that his guidance on fostering an engaging learning environment and the use of creative teaching approaches would significantly enhance their teaching practices. His insights were an essential part of the workshop, helping educators understand the profound impact of communicative English in today's globalized world.
