Onam Celebration at Fathima Memorial Training College: A Festive Extravaganza

On September 11 and 12, 2024, Fathima Memorial Training College (FMTC) in Mylapore, Kollam, came alive with the vibrant celebrations of Onam, one of the most significant festivals in Kerala. The two-day event was filled with traditional festivities, games, and cultural performances, creating a joyful atmosphere that brought together students, faculty, and staff.

The celebrations commenced on the first day with an official inauguration led by Dr. Lakshmy Natarajan, the Principal of FMTC. In her address, she highlighted the cultural significance of Onam and the values of unity and togetherness that the festival represents. Following her inspiring speech, the students participated in a traditional Vanchipattu, a boat song performed by seniors, which added a delightful touch of tradition to the festivities.

The first day also featured several Onam games, allowing students to engage in friendly competition and teamwork. These games not only fostered camaraderie among students but also highlighted the essence of fun and cooperation inherent in Onam celebrations.

The second day of the celebration was officially inaugurated by Sri. Shajahan Younus, Chairman of FMET, and Sri. Noushad Younus, Secretary of FMET. Their presence added a sense of grandeur to the event, as they encouraged students to embrace and celebrate their rich cultural heritage.

Following the inauguration, students showcased their talent through captivating performances of Onam songs and traditional dances. These performances resonated with the spirit of Onam and left the audience spellbound.

One of the major highlights of the day was the Onasadhya, a grand traditional feast featuring a variety of delectable vegetarian dishes served on banana leaves. The aroma and presentation of the food created a feast for the senses, and everyone enjoyed the sumptuous meal that truly embodied the spirit of Onam.

As the day progressed, the excitement continued with the Malayali Manga competition, where students showcased their creativity and artistry in depicting traditional themes related to Onam. This competition was a feast for the eyes, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Kerala through art and creativity.

To conclude the two-day celebration, the much-anticipated Onam Tug of War took place. The intense competition brought together students in a spirited battle of strength and teamwork, marking a thrilling end to the festivities.

The two-day event not only celebrated the joyous spirit of Onam but also reinforced the importance of tradition, unity, and collaboration.
